南北朝（420～589）

420年に劉宋・武帝が即位して以降160年間、華南では宋、斉、梁、陳の4朝が建康を都として立ち、これを南朝と言う。
一方386年の淝水の戦いで前秦が敗れた後、その前秦に滅ぼされた代の子孫・鮮卑郡拓跋部が北魏を建国、439年に黄河流域を統一するが、535年東魏と西魏に分裂、後東魏は北斉へ、西魏は北周へと政権が移り、これら五つの王朝を北朝と呼ぶ。
南北朝とは北朝と南朝の並立時代のことを指す。
