新王朝を建てた満州族は、もとは女真族と呼ばれ、現中国東北地方の山地や森林に居住していた。女真族は12世紀に金国を建て、中国北部を支配していた。そのため明王朝は、建州（遼東の山地）・海西（松花江流域）・野人（黒龍江流域）の3部に分断し、直轄領である遼東平野の北端（開原撫順から鴨緑江の河口に至る線上）に辺牆（へんしょう）という土塁を築いて女真族との境界としていた。
